An Unholy Church

"An unholy church!

It is useless to the world, and of no esteem among men.

It is an abomination, hell’s laughter, heaven’s abhorrence.

The worst evils which have ever come upon the world

have been brought upon her by an unholy church."

~ Charles H. Spurgeon

The Beauty of Self Control

We all struggle with self control on many different levels,
many especially with anger.
JR Miller had some thoughts on this:

There are men who rule other men and cannot rule themselves.

They are victorious in battle, but they cannot control their own temper, restrain their own speech, or hold in calm quiet their own spirits.

There is nothing beautiful in such a life. Nothing more effectually mars a life than fretfulness, discontent, worry, impatience. Nothing is more pitiful than a life made to be strong, kingly, noble, calm, peaceful, but which is, instead, the play of every excitement, every temper, every resentment, every appetite and passion.

Someone says, “Alexander conquered all the world, except — Alexander.”

Not only is self control strong — it is also beautiful.
Anger is not beautiful. Ungoverned temper is not lovely.
 Rage is demonic.
But a spirit calm, strong, and unflustered, amid storms of feeling and all manner of disturbing emotions,
is sublime in its beauty.

“A temper under control,
a heart subdued into tenderness and patience,
a voice cheerful with hope, and a countenance bright with kindness,
are invaluable possessions to any man or woman.”

-JR Miller, The Beauty of Self-Control

A Wise Woman's Vision for Home Life

The beauty and power of homelife is hard to overestimate when "a wise woman builds her house" (Proverbs 14:1).

She builds investment and beauty and stability that would make a family say, "There's no place like home." God has appointed a home to be a center of the ministry of the church; a source of peace for all who enter there; a place of hospitality.  The home is the fountain of society, and the spring from which flow the members of the church, the ranks of business and the citizens of the realm.

Please understand how important home life really is.

O daughters of Zion, see what a piece of heaven you  can provide to the weary and lost of this world by making your home a rich and overflowing fountain of the love of Christ. See the importance of  a rich home life that sends out happy children to the ends of the earth. See how being a keeper at home make you a key players in raising the next generation. Understand how you will be filling the earth with worshippers and providing the churches and towns and nations with the knowledge of God.

Dying to Self

When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you don't sting and hurt with the insult or the oversight, but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself, but take it all in patient, loving silence.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, any unpunctuality, or any annoyance; when you stand face-to-face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility-and endure it as Jesus endured.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, any society, any raiment, any interruption by the will of God.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation, or to record your own good works, or itch after commendations, when you can truly love to be unknown.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart.

~THAT IS DYING TO SELF~

Are you dead yet?

In these last days, the Spirit would bring us to the cross.

Purpose to Fight Hard and Hold Fast

"History is not made by majorities, but by dedicated minorities of like-minded friends who have joined together in common cause.

This was the Pilgrim legacy, and it must be ours as well.

To change the world, courageous men and women must “fight hard and hold fast” to the things they know to be true. Most people will not fight hard and hold fast (which is why most people are spectators instead of world-changers). If you are grateful, purpose to be engaged.

Purpose to be part of an important work for the Lord.
Purpose to stand with those who are fighting hard and holding fast.
Purpose to be a twenty-first-century pilgrim for Jesus Christ."

The Destructive Influence of the Foolish Woman

The destructive influence of foolish women is readily apparent in the secular world. In recent years we have seen the power of foolish women to tear down and destroy the moral sensitivities and fiber of an entire nation. We can all think of high profile women, entertainers, politicians, wives of public figures--whose philosophies and lifestyles have wielded an enormous, negative influence on our entire culture.

However, what should trouble us even more is the extent to which foolishness among women has permeated the evangelical church. We have followed the world in redefining what it means to be a woman, as well as what is means to be a man. We have blurred, if not eradicated, the distinctions between feminine and masculine character, behavior and roles.

We have lost our moorings, our sense of what is pure and good, true and right. We have little comprehension of the meaning or importance of such old-fashioned words such as wholesome, modest, discreet and chaste.

Encouragement for Mothers

Hello, my dear readers, it's a beautiful Monday morning here and I want to encourage you to start your week out being refreshed in His Word, strengthened in His power and encouraged by His spirit.

Know that all you do as a wife and mother is a ministry to the Lord. The cup that you fill, the meal that you make, the socks that you fold and the clothes that you mend. Every single and last bit of it is your kingdom work for Him and counts tremendously.

Here are some encouraging quotes on Motherhood for  you to remind  you of your might impact:

Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs in my field, since the payment is pure love.  ~Mildred B. Vermont

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life.  ~Abraham Lincoln

The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.  ~HonorĂ© de Balzac

An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.  ~Spanish Proverb

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.  ~Washington Irving

A little girl, asked where her home was, replied, "where mother is."  ~Keith L. Brooks

One good mother is worth a hundred schoolmasters.  ~George Herbert

I cannot forget my mother.  [S]he is my bridge.  When I needed to get across, she steadied herself long enough for me to run across safely.  ~Renita Weems

Mothers, ask the Lord for wisdom this week as you embark on it. Take each minute to truly relish every moment and try not to hurry through your day to cross off your self-made to do list. Don't be angry because your home is messy or cluttered but know that your family lives there and be thankful for that. Thank Him for everything because without Him you would not be alive.  Slow down and enjoy the many rich blessings the Lord has bestowed upon you and you will have a blessed day!

The Home of Our Childhood

There is music in the word Home.

To the old it brings a bewitching strain from the harp of memory,

to the middle aged it brings up happy thoughts,

while to the young it is a reminder of all that is near and dear to them.

Our hearts turn with unchangeable love and longing

to the dear old home which sheltered us in childhood.

Kind friends may beckon us to newer scenes,

and loving hearts may bind us fast to other pleasant homes;

but we love to return to the home of our childhood.

It may be old and rickety to the eyes of strangers;

the windows may have been broken and patched long ago,

and the floor worn through,

but it is still the old home from out of which we looked at life with hearts full of hope;

building castles which faded long ago.

The Home is a Seminary

The home is a seminary of infinite importance.

It is important because it is universal, and because the education it bestows gives color to the whole texture of life.  The things said there give bias to character far more than do sermons, lectures, newspapers, and book. No other teachers have acknowledged the divine right to instruct children that is granted without challenge to parents. The foundation of our national life is in their hands. They can make it send forth waters bitter or sweet, for the death or the healing of the people.

The smallest bit of opinion sown in the minds of children in private life later issue forth to the world
and become its public opinions,
for nations are gathered out of nurseries.

Her Creation is Her Home

The ideal domestic worker is an artist
and her creation is her home.

The artist takes what materials he has and manipulates them,
but the goal is not just to create something interesting,
but to express a vision of love and beauty.

Even Michelangelo worked with the most banal of materials and ordinary techniques.
All was imbued with imagination and vision.
It may seem ridiculous to compare a humble home
filled with love and simple beauty
to the Sistine Chapel.
But, they are the same in that they are both works of artistry
and express first and foremost the human soul.

The State of the Home

"The state of a nation

is always determined

by the state of the home."

-Anna Sofia and Elizabeth Botkin, Biblical Femininity

If Christ is not the center of our homes, we will have a godless nation and we are seeing the result of that fruit right now.

How is your home looking?

Did you know it affects...

the nation

generations

your neighborhood

the church

the eternal?

Let us not look past the vision of building strong Christian homes for our King, but instead grasp it and run forward in excellency for Him!

Woman's Beautiful Sphere of Influence

One of the most hallowed, lovely, and beautiful sights in our world is, a woman at home discharging in all the meekness of wisdom, the various duties of wife and mother, with an order that nothing is allowed to disturb; a patience which nothing can exhaust; an affection which is never ruffled; and a perseverance that no difficulties can interrupt, nor any disappointments arrest—in short, such a scene as that described by the writer of the most exquisite chapter of the Proverbs. Eve in Paradise, in all her untainted loveliness, by the side of Adam, propping the lily, training the vine, or directing the growth of the rose; shedding upon him, and receiving, reflected back from his noble countenance upon her happy spirit, such smiles as told in silent language, their perfect and mutual bliss, was no doubt, a brighter image of perfect virtue and undisturbed felicity; but to me, a woman in our fallen world, guiding in piety, intelligence, and all matronly and motherly excellences, the circle of a home made happy chiefly by her influence, presents a scene little inferior in beauty, and far superior as a display of virtue and intelligence, to that of which our first mother was the center even in her original perfections. And it is imagination, and not reason and moral taste, that can revel in the mind's pictures of Eve in Paradise, and not feel warmer admiration in the actual presence of such a woman as I have described.

But it will, perhaps, be asked, whether I would shut up every married woman within the domestic circle, and, with the jealousy and authority of an oriental despot, confine her to her own home; or whether I would condemn and degrade her to mere household drudgery. I have, I think, protected myself already from this imputation, by representing her as the companion, counselor, and comforter of man. She shall, with my consent, never sink from the side of man, to be trampled under his feet. She shall not have one ray of her glory extinguished, nor be deprived of a single honor that belongs to her sex; but to be the instructress of her children, the companion of her husband, and the queen partner of the domestic state, is no degradation—and she only is degraded who thinks so!

Christianity has provided a place for woman for which she is fitted, and in which she shines; but take her out of that place, and her luster pales and sheds a feeble and sickly ray! Or to change the metaphor, woman is a plant, which in its own greenhouse seclusion will put forth all its brilliant colors and all its sweet perfume; but remove it from the protection of its own floral home into the common garden and open field, where hardier flowers will grow and thrive—its beauty fades and its fragrance is diminished. Neither reason nor Christianity invites woman to the professor's chair, or conducts her to the lawyer's bar, or makes her welcome to the pulpit, or admits her to the place of the magistracy. Both exclude her, not indeed by positive and specific commands, but by general principles and spirit, alike from the violence and evil of the military, the debates of the senate, and the pleadings of the forum. And they bid her beware how she lays aside the delicacy of her sex, and listens to any doctrines which claim new rights for her, and becomes the dupe of those who have put themselves forward as her advocates only to gain notoriety, or perhaps unneeded income.

The Bible gives her her place of majesty and dignity in the domestic circle—the heart of her husband and the heart of her family. It is the female supremacy of that domain, where love, tenderness, refinement, thought and tender feeling preside. "It is the privilege of making her husband happy and honored, and her sons and daughters the ornaments of human society. It is the sphere of piety, prudence, diligence, in the domestic station, and a holy and devout life. It is the sphere that was occupied by Hannah, the mother of Samuel; by Elizabeth, the mother of John; by Eunice, the mother of Timothy; and by Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is the respect and esteem of mankind."

It is, as Dr. Spring has said, that silent, unobserved, unobtrusive influence, by which she accomplishes more for her race, than many whose names occupy a broad space on the page of history. A woman who fills well the sphere assigned to her, as a wife and mother; who trains up good citizens for the state, and good fathers and mothers of other families which are to spring from her own; and so from generation to generation in all but endless succession, need not complain that her sphere of action and her power of influence are too limited for female ambition to aspire to. The mothers of the wise and the good are the benefactresses of the human race.

What would be gained to woman's comfort, respectability, or usefulness, or to the welfare of society, and how much would be lost to each, by withdrawing her from her own appropriate sphere, and introducing her to that for which she has no adaptation? Who, but a few wild visionaries, and rash speculatists, and mistaken advocates of 'woman's rights', would take her from the home of her husband, of her children, and of her own heart—to wear out her strength, consume her time, and destroy her feminine excellence—in committee-rooms, on platforms, in mechanics shop, or philosophical institutions?

But may not woman, in every way in her power—benefit society by her talents and her influence? Certainly, in every legitimate way. Her sphere is clearly assigned to her by God—and only by very special and obvious calls should she be induced to leave it. Whatever breaks down the modest reserve, the domestic virtues, the persuasive gentleness, of woman, is an injury done to the community. Woman can be spared from the lecturer's chair, the platform of general convocation, and the scene of public business; but she cannot be spared from the hearth of her husband, and the circle of her children! Substitutes can be found for her in the one, but not in the other. In the bosom of domestic privacy she fulfills with truest dignity and faithfulness the first and highest obligations of her sex.

~from FEMALE PIETY, written in 1852 by John Angell James (1785-1859)

A Woman's Influence

Woman's influence is the chief anchor of society,
and this influence is purifying the world,
and the work she has already accomplished will last forever.
No costly marble can build a more enduring monument to her memory
than the impress she makes on her own household.

The changing scenes of life may hurl the genius of man from eminence to utter ruin;
for his life hangs on the fabric of public opinion.
But the honest form of a true mother reigns queen in the hearts of her children forever.

Be It Ever So Humble

If we would have a true home,
we must guard well our thoughts and actions.
A single bitter word
may disquiet the home for a whole day;
but, like unexpected flowers
which spring up along our path full of freshness, fragrance, and beauty,
so do kind words and gentle acts and sweet disposition
make glad the home
where peace and blessing dwell.

No matter how humble the abode,
if it be thus garnished with grace
and sweetened by kindness and smiles,
the heart will turn lovingly towards it
from all the tumults of the world,

and home,
"be it ever so humble,"
will be the dearest spot under the sun.

Hold On

When your body is betraying you and your mind is spinning.
Hold on.
When hope seems like it is light years away and strength is disappearing.
Hold on.
When your relationships are crumbling and your feeling all alone.
Hold on.
When life is throwing death at you from every direction and you think that's all there is left.
Hold on.
When you feel your faith is fruitless and that it's all a farce.
Hold on.
When you feel like giving up, don't give in to those feelings.
Hold on.

Keep watching and praying, Keep trusting and believing. Keep singing and offering the sacrifice of praise. Don't let go of what you know is true. Don't let the lies rob you of your joy and don't let the devil deceive you. Hold on, Hold on, Hold on.

Help is on the way!

Hold on to Jesus, He's holding on to you.

If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me and Your right hand will lay hold of me.
- Psalm 139:9-10

The Biblical Family Under Attack

Because the family is so central to building up a godly society, it has always been under attack by unbelievers and is in particularly great danger today.

At the root of outright hatred of family bonds lies sinful man's craving to be independent of God and his fellow men so he may do as he pleases and not be burdened or restrained by any responsibilities or obligations. Such individual anarchy and selfishness among ever growing numbers of people eventually leads to the breakdown of society at large. But this is not the end: the most ruthless and selfish people will usurp the government and enslave the rest of the people to serve their own ends. He who will not serve God his Creator invites human tyranny, as history shows.

As C. S. Lewis wrote, "Some fatal flaw always brings the selfish and cruel people to the top and [civilization) slides back into misery and ruin.

It seems to start up all right and runs a few yards, and then it breaks down. They are trying to run it on the wrong juice [instead of on God Himself]. That is what Satan has done to us humans." (Mere Christianity. p.39).

Modern enemies of biblical Christianity have attacked the family on the grounds of evolution, denying the biblical creation account (for instance. Sigmund Freud). The vituperative attack on the family by Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx's co-founder of Marxism-Communism, was based upon evolution. For him, the monogamous family was founded upon enslavement of the woman by the man, and original group marriage was replaced by individual marriages inevitably accompanied by adultery and prostitution. His idea of marriage was that of a contract based only upon physical love, which could be easily broken. Likewise Engels looked upon private property not as a trust under God, but rather as theft from communal ownership of all things, and to be abolished, as it is today in Communist countries. Consider that Communism dominates about half the world today and bids fair to conquer it all by invasion (Afghanistan, Tibet), subversion, and by confluence with New Age thought in the anticipated one-world state of the near future. "Communal ownership" means administration by the state/government, and in practice by the ruling elite.

Because the biblical family protects true cohesion and love, and points to the God of Scripture and His true freedom in Christ, it is especially under attack in today's "post-Christian" world. One line of attack is to confuse the difference between a true family and "people living together" no matter who they are. Another is to take over the education of the children. Another is to discriminate against biblical families by peer pressure (as against families with more than two children). by tax disadvantages, and by contempt against "homemakers" in the name of feminist "self-esteem," "self-fulfillment," etc.

Enemies of the biblical family also suppress the lesson all `History teaches, namely, that breakdown of marriage and family has always been a sure precursor of the breakdown of an entire society or state.' Ancient Greece and Rome are perfect examples of this historical fact.

Because the family is God's basic social institution,

to abandon or destroy it

is to destroy

society.

The Broad and Narrow

"How can it be a large career
to tell other people's children about arithmetic

and a small career to tell one's own children about the universe?

How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone
and narrow to be everything to someone?

No, a woman's function is laborious
because it is gigantic,

not because it is minute."

Fatherhood Quotes

Father's Day will be here in a blink of an eye and around the Fuentes household we are busily preparing to have everyone over. I thought I would share some quotes:

None of the things I remember about my father had anything at all to do with his lifestyle of whom he knew or the places he had been or the style of the clothes he wore. I just knew that he was always there. -Cal Thomas

A father carries pictures where his money used to be. -Author Unknown

There is no more vital calling or vocation for men than fathering. -John Throop

Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him Father! -Lydia M. Child

Children's children are the crown of old men and the glory of children are their fathers. -Proverbs 17:6

My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person--he believed in me. -Jim Valvano

One night a father overheard his son pray, "Dear God, make me the kind of man my daddy is."---Later that night, the father prayed, "Dear God, make me the kind of man my son wants me to be. -Anonymous

F...You are my friend.
A...You are my ally.
T...You are my teacher.
H...You are my hero.
E...You are my example.
R...You are my rock.

Here is how we have celebrated Father's Day in the past and a tribute I had written to my own father.

Feel free to print this out and stick this into your Father's Day card!

Have a Happy Father's Day and don't forget to honor the special men in your life!

Sisters and Brothers

Sisters scarcely know the influence they have over their brothers.

A young man once testified that the greatest proof to the truth of Christian religion was his sister's life.
