Spring Shapeup Week 6 - Coming Back from an Illness

We all face obstacles that hinder us from accomplishing our fitness goals and this past month or so I've been hit with a doozy. When we first started the Spring Shapeup Challenge back at the beginning of March, I was so pumped to get ready for the season, but over the past few weeks, I've had a few things that have really set me back in my goals.

Source
Two weeks in I got sick and although I tried to keep my workouts up, I knew I had to take it easy. With my vacation approaching, I pushed on through and then tried to focus on keeping active while I was away. I had just gotten back from Florida and was starting to feel better when I had a few job related issues come up and before I knew it I was just a big stress ball. I tried to turn to fitness for some stress relief and took the amazing Muay Thai class. I could feel the pressure melting away with each kick, but I guess it wasn't enough, because the lack of sleep, sporatic eating and high nerves caught up with me and before I knew it I had a nasty cold again.

Talk about putting a damper on your fitness! I wasn't eating great - no appetite to eat, but when I did it wasn't always the healthiest of choices. I didn't have any energy to even walk across the apartment, let along go out for a run through the neighbourhood. Only a few weeks off my routine and I felt weak, drained and frumpy. Its amazing how quickly you can change.

But sometimes it can be the reverse too - you can change back for the better. I started to feel better this week, so I took this as a cue to get my butt back in gear. I'd been down in the dumps for too long and it was time for an attitude change. Wednesday night I packed up my gym bag and left it by the door. It was the first thing that I saw on Thursday morning and I knew that I had to go back to the gym.

I'm not going to pretend that I was all peppy and happy to go. I dragged my feet the entire way from the change room to the weight room, but I had to do it. I did my normal Strength Training routine and it was a struggle the whole time, but I knew it was good for me. I cranked up the awesome tunes I had playing and I got to work.

And you know what? By the end of that session I felt a hundred times better. I had new found energy and the desire to do more stretching and yoga when I got home. I called up the boyfriend and teased him about getting his own butt to the gym (he was dragging his feet too).

My whole attitude changed. I woke up the next day and biked to the latest episode of "The Vampire Diaries" (Are any of you watching this? I'm so hooked!). I made plans again to go to classes next week with friends. I took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and took Whiskey for a nice walk through the city. In other words - I got moving. Once I got going again it was easier than I thought. It can be hard to motivate yourself after a set back, but the key is to make time for it...and make time for yourself!

To get myself pumped up to go back to the gym this week I made a playlist with some of my favorite heart pumping Hip Hop songs.

Spring Shapeup Week 5 - Muay Thai Boxing

Everyone hits plateaus and gets bored with their workouts. When I need to rev myself up again, I try to find something totally different that gets me out of my comfort zone. For awhile now I've wants to try some form of kickboxing or boxing, so last week when I was having a particularly stressful day I decided to head over and try a class. I was sure that all those punches and kicks would get all my frustrations out and I'd get a great (much needed) workout.

I've heard great things about the Toronto Kickboxing & Muay Thai Academy in downtown Toronto. The facility offers a range of class levels, as well as personal training. I of course started at the very beginners class, but there were some amazing athletes training while I was there and it was great motivation.

I was worried that it would be a mostly male class, which can sometimes be intimidating, but I was surprised when I showed up and saw that the classes were made up of at least 50% women!

The hour and a half class really kicked my butt - in a good way. We did plenty of cardio drills at the beginning, followed by some ab exercises (that I was still feeling 4 days later!), then we were taught the movies. We teamed up and learned some of the more common punches and kicks, while our instructor went around and corrected us. It was great having an instructor who was so hands on and focused on helping everyone improve. To wrap up the class, they had us do crazy drills involving crab walking (with boxing gloves on), followed by punches, kicks and pushups. I knew that I was going to crash into bed the second that I got home. It felt great!

I love the way that the class challenged my body and mind. For days afterward I felt the effects. I'll definitely be trying these classes again!

If you're finding yourself in a workout rut, go out there and try something unlike anything else that you've done before. Take an acrobatics class at a circus school. Give a dance class a whirl. Maybe even a pole dancing class. Whatever it is, your body will be happy for a little change and, who knows, you might even have a little fun :)

Spring Shapeup Week 3 - Easing Out of Winter

Its hard to motivate yourself to get back into gear after a long cold winter, especially up here in Canada. Its too cold and icy some days to go for a run outside without fear of falling, so I am often forced to keep my workout indoors. I just have to keep reminding myself that if I keep it up the next few weeks inside, then my reward will be getting to go back outside. Some of you in other parts of the continent already have great weather and I hope that you're taking advantage of this and getting out there to enjoy the freedom of not having to stay in a gym.

I wish that I could workout like this right now in Canada!

There are a couple of things that you can do to help motivate yourself to keep up the workouts until spring comes along and we're more inclined to head outdoors.

Mix up your cardio - You don't have to stay on one machine the entire time to get a great cardio workout. On days that I'm just not feeling like staying on a treadmill or elliptical the whole time, I will mix it up. I might do 15 minutes on the treadmill, 15 minutes on the stationary bike and then 15 minutes on the elliptical. I'll get a good 45 minutes fit in, but it goes by much faster than if I'd stayed put the whole time.

Bring along a friend - If I want to make sure that I'll head to the gym after work, I'll make plans to go with a friend. If I know I have someone who is counting on me to show up I won't chicken out and head home instead. Plus I get to catch up with them and have a visit too!

Try something new - When I really start to feel my motivation swaying, I try to find a new, fun activity that I've never tried before. Look for classes at your local gym, or call up another sports club to see what they offer. Most places will let you go for the first time free or cheap. Its a great way to try something new without spending much money.

Workout at home - If I really don't want to walk to the gym in the cold/snowy/rainy weather that is so common this time of year, I will stay home to workout. I'll pop in a DVD, look up some fun YouTube videos, do my Couch Potato Workout or maybe even just some stretching and Bedtime Yoga.

Whatever you chose to do, its just important to get moving and challenge yourself. No matter how much I don't want to workout, I always try to tell myself that if I do 15 minutes and don't like it, I can quit. I find that once I get going I'll feel better and won't want to quit anyways!

What do you like to do to keep you
motivated to stay active indoors?

For this week's playlist, I went back to my love of older music from the 50s and 60s. There is something about this music that just gets me singing along and breezing through my workout.

So, lace up those sneakers, dust off that old bike and dig those free weights out of the back of the closet. We're all going to work together to improve our health and fitness just in time for shorts season :)

Goals

This time around, I'm setting three attainable goals to complete in the next 10 weeks. Feel free to set your own too!

 1. Increase strength: Focus on more strength training, while still finding time to do the cardio I love (biking, swimming and running)

2. Increase Flexibility: Giving myself the time to properly stretch. Taking pilates and yoga classes.

3. Consistent Dedication: Try new classes to keep my motivation up! Keep track of progress right here on Small Home Big Start with weekly posts about the Spring Shape Up Challenge!

To get this challenge rolling, I thought the first playlist should be some current hits that I've been digging at the gym lately. I don't usually listen to music like this, but for some reason, when I get to the gym I need something that is loud, catchy and fun.

Week One Playlist: Let's Get Started!
1. Forget You - Cee Lo Green (Although I prefer the original version)
2. Higher - Taio Cruz f. Travie McCoy
3. Bulletproof - La Roux
4. Firework - Katy Perry
5. Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine
6. Ghost - Fefe Dobson
7. Hello - Martin Solveig & Dragonette
8. Bang Bang - K'naan
9. Evacuate the Dancefloor - Cascada
10. Let It Rock - Kevin Rudolph ft Lil Wayne
