Easter Decor Inspiration

Once I put together my Easter Tree, the whole apartment started to feel more like Spring. It may still be chilly outside, but inside we're celebrating the ever closer arrival of warmer weather. I've been making a few more little tweaks here and there, but I need some more inspiration, so I turned to the wonderful world of the web. Its amazing the ideas and inspiration that you can get from the creative people out there!

My all-time favorite inspiration is Martha Stewart and her amazing creative team. Just looking at this image of a bunny-inspired Easter Party makes me remember being a kid and going to the fun parties that my mother and her friends would put together. There would be games, colourful decorations and delicious pastel confections. I think that is where my chocolate Mini Eggs addiction started.

There is something about the whimsical drawings of this Tablecloth and napkin set (Pottery Barn Easter Bunny Floral Garden Napkin $39.50) that evokes all the colours and growth of Spring. If I didn't have a knack for spilling blueberry jam on nice white linens, I'd splurge for a set of these adorable napkins.

These fun Crepe Carrots take a little work to make them, but it seems worth it when you see them all nestled in a basket together. These would also be cute as place cards at an Easter Brunch, or as the topper on a sweet Easter present (perhaps a box of Carrot Cupcakes?)

Brightly coloured eggs are symbolic of Spring's arrival and these Speckle Swirl Glass Eggs (Crate & Barrel, $19.95 for set of 12) are a beautiful addition to Easter decor with their soft speckled design in soft pastel colours. I saw these in person the other day and they were just as pretty as the look here!

Those eggs would look great nestled in a potted hyacinth like these eggs above.

With so much new life growing outside right now, it wonderful to bring the outdoors inside. Martha Stewart showed this great (and simple) way to add some colour to your table. Place a painted egg shell inside an eggcup and fill with beautiful flowers from outdoors. I especially love the use of the crisp white Lily of the Valley with the vivid violets of the pansies.

How do you like to decorate to celebrate the arrival of Spring?

How to make an Easter Tree

Things are finally starting to feel a little like Spring around here, which means that its time to get some Easter decorations out! This year I decided to make a little Easter Tree to put on the bookshelf in the living room. It seemed like just the ticket for brightening the place up for the new season!

I tried to use some things that I already had like the terracotta pot, paint and filler, and in the end the whole project only cost me $7, including the bunnies! Not bad considering how expensive a tree like this would be from a decor store.

To start off, I applied shellac to the interior and exterior of the pot. Using a foam brush, I made a thin layer, allowed it to dry and then applied another thin layer. Just to be sure that it was no longer sticky, I let it completely dry overnight.

The next morning, I used a small foam roller to apply pale yellow acrylic paint. To prevent any uneven areas, I did several thin layers, allowing drying time between each coating. Once it was completely dry, I cut a piece of craft oasis (foam) to fit the inside.

These sticks made the tree so much easier to made. Originally I was going to attach my own plastic eggs to branches I found outside, but when I noticed these at the dollar store (Dollarama, for all you fellow Canadians) I realized that my work was done for me. At $1 a branch, I picked one in every colour - pink, yellow, purple, green and blue.

I love the sweet little buds and the speckled details in the eggs. I still can't believe that these were only a dollar!

Before putting the branches in, I made sure that the oasis block was firmly in place.

I cut the branches to the desired height, then wrapped them together with some brown florists tape. I didn't want them to wobble in the oasis, so I wrapped some blue poster putty around the base to secure everything.

To hide the oasis and the putty, I used some packing grass that I had from a package that was delivered. Its nice to find a way to reuse something like that!

These sweet little bunnies were also a dollar store find. Originally I was going to paint them over with matte paint, but in the end I loved the little hand painted details, like the nose, ears and eyes.

Its amazing how a little bit of colour in your apartment can do wonders for your mood!

Next time I made something like this, I might take the time to grow some real cat grass to have along the edges, but that takes about two weeks of forethought, and I'm lucky if I have two hours.

To keep with the theme, I also rearranged the books on the shelf to try and match the Spring colours. I usually keep them organize in a rainbow pattern (or even red and pink for Valentine's Day), but this decor just seemed to call for pastels.

I've made a few other little Spring tweaks to the apartment lately and I'll be sure to post them this week.

Have you been doing any Spring decorating?
How excited are you for warmer weather to be on the way?

Carrot Cake Cupcakes

I would like to refer to these as the "Easter Dessert That Almost Wasn't". It took three tries to get this right and it had nothing to do with the recipe, and more to do with human error. Perhaps a Comedy of Errors? I can laugh about it now, but at the time it was a little frustrating. But despite all the little hiccups, I had been dreaming about these deliciously spiced cupcakes with sinful cream cheese icing for weeks...and there would be no substitutes.

The recipe itself is a tried and true family favourite that my Great Aunt M makes for us. I remember being a little kid and going to visit her up at the farm house and she would have a batch of this made in a cake pan, with little toothpicks stuck in the top to keep the cling wrap from touching the icing. Counting the toothpicks before we cut into it was a ritual in itself.

Although she traditionally makes this in a cake pan, but cupcakes seemed like a fun variation and made for easy travelling to the family lunch. I've posted the directions for making this as a cake at the bottom.

What you'll need:

Cupcake Batter:
2 cups Grated Carrots
3 Eggs
1 cup White Sugar
3/4 cup Oil
1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
1 1/4 tsp Baking Powder
1 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Salt

Cream Cheese Icing:
4 oz package of Cream Cheese
2 cups of Icing Sugar
1/4 cup Butter, melted
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Lemon Juice

My sister really got into grating the carrots with the new food processor attachment that my dad gave my mother for Christmas. Great for grating cheese, not so great for carrots. They just kept whipping around in big chunks. Maybe we should read the manual again...We ended up using the hand grater after the first batch.

In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.

In a large bowl or mixer, beat eggs.

Add sugar gradually and beat well. Add oil and beat.

Alternate adding carrots and flour to the egg mixture until just mixed.

Spoon cupcake batter into paper liners until 3/4 full. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean. We had a few mishaps when we made them this weekend...

We burnt the edges of the first batch of cupcakes after putting them in an oven that was off by 100 degrees! Such things do happen from time to time, but we had plenty of carrots and ingredients, so just make another batch right?

Wrong. As the cupcakes were cooling someone (Hi Mom!) dropped a glass on the muffin tin and it shattered all over the second batch of cupcakes :(

But we couldn't let this get the best of us, so we grated some more carrots and went for a hat trick.

Thankfully on the third try everything went a-okay. Transfer cupcakes to a wire rack and allow to cool completely. Pat yourself on the back if you managed to not burn or any, or turn them into small weapons. (Killer Cupcakes!)

To make the icing, beat together the cream cheese and butter until very smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until smooth. Beat in vanilla and lemon juice. With a knife, spread cream cheese icing on top of each cupcake.

Little C thought that they were fanastic and immediately sank her teeth into the creamy icing. I have not idea where she learned to do that ;)

To make as a cake: Pout batter into a buttered, floured 9" baking pan. bake for 55 min. Allow to cool and cover in cream cheese icing.

We had a very laid back, low key celebration at the Leifheit household. My aunt and uncle came over and we went to a late church service, where we had a chance to watch Alison Krauss sing some hymns (my parents go to the same church as she does, apparently!). We came back to sit on the porch and talk for a few hours before an early supper of ham, Neil's brioche, my dad's potatoes au gratin with white cheddar, and asparagus.. and blueberry cheesecake for dessert. And in the evening, more sitting around, more wine, more talking. More Cadbury egg eating. We had intentions of watching The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Neil and I made an Ash tube sock mask for Bloom last week), but it just never happened. It was perfect.

I love holidays where nothing is planned and everyone is relaxed. I really missed my sisters, though. Fortunately, I'll be with them next year for Easter.. maybe we can dye eggs together and write obscene things on them with the invisible crayon! It's our favorite sisterly Easter tradition, and it's one we'll probably never grow out of.

That's all for tonight. Time for some buttonhole sewing, package packing, and Mass Effect playing.

Family Feast

Over the weekend I went with my family to go for Easter lunch at my Nana's place. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and we had a blast hanging outside together. Here are a few snapshots from the festivities.

My little cousin C had been to an egg hunt earlier and had her face painted. I love the cute little pearls that she is wearing. Meet the future June Cleaver.

All the female cousins (minus me). I like to lovingly refer to my sister as the "Black Sheep", aa she is the only cousin on that side of our family who has dark hair.

My Great Aunt Irene and my Grandfather were on hand for some Easter ham with all the fixings. I bet they're glad that they didn't go to Florida this Spring when its been even nicer here.

My brother, Dad, cousin and Grandfather all relaxing on the porch. Or maybe they're just escaping doing the dishes (which I guess you could say about me too, considering that I'm the one taking the pictures).

Sisterly Love?

The centerpieces that I explained yesterday. Hard to believe that they cost less than $4 each to make.

My cousin Betty brought these amazing tea biscuits. It was a fight to see who got to take home the leftovers and there wasn't many left after we'd plowed our way through four tins.

I was just happy to finally get to taste one of the Carrot Cake Cupcakes that I had struggled with the day before (see yesterday's post for complete story. It was bad.)

Little C loved the muffins too. She ate the tops off with all the cream cheese icing. That a girl!

How much willpower does one doberman have to not eat one of those foil wrapped Easter eggs?

We were all thoroughly enthralled with the whole event. (For the record she was good and didn't eat it, so I gve her an Oatmeal cookie as a treat. Oatmeal cookies are Shadow's favorite and she'll do just about anything for them.)

Christy opening some Easter goodies. She was rocking the old school Pez despenser all day. I forgot how awesome those things are.

I love this whole outfit on my cousin. The flowery dress, subtle gold necklace and the rocking hot pink shades.

And her hair. I've always loved her hair. When we were kids she always had the most amazingly angelic halo of curls around her head. I had tangled floppy straight hair. I was jealous to say the least.

Donning his Armani sunglasses, my big cousin took to impersonating the Easter Bunny and hiding small foil eggs all around the porch for Little C to go looking for. It was so cute to see her running along with a little basket hunting for the little eggs.

Whiskey and Shadow had a good romp around the tennis courts while we were there. It was nice to be able to just open the doors and let them go without worrying about them wandering off. However, Shadow did quickly learn that it was a bad idea to run across the pool cover. Lets just say that her belly had a bit of a bath.

I think Whiskey was just happy to be outside without shivering his butt off.

My Nana was dogsitting for a friend this weekend, so the pooch got to come along for the afternoon as well. This dog just sat there watching the other dogs play as he perfected his "sad face".

"Please just drop a piece of that Easter ham. I promise I won't tell anyone."

A great Easter lunch with the whole gang. Love you guys :)
